Acting Team Manager – Integrated Mental Health Team

We have an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Senior Social Worker  to work in the Integrated Mental Health Team as an Acting Team Manager. This post has been created due to an existing Team Manager reducing their hours.  We’re keen to support an existing WBC Senior Social Worker to develop their leadership and managerial skills  within this part time position (2 Days Per Week – Thursdays & Fridays), on a 1-year secondment basis. The usual permission requests for secondments apply and you must speak to your line manager in the first instance before applying.

As a team manager, you’ll guide a skilled group of registered and non‑registered professionals who support adults with significant mental health needs to live safely, independently, and well in the community.

You’ll be responsible for the day‑to‑day running of the team, ensuring that our work meets legal duties and reflects our values: strengths‑based practice, partnership working, independence, and dignity.

This is a key leadership role within Adult Social Care and a chance to contribute to the strategic development of mental health services across the borough.

This is an exciting time to join us. We are an Award‑Winning Local Authority and were recently recognised by the Care Quality Commission as one of the best adult social care services in the country and ranked 2nd nationally in the Impower Productivity Index.

We’re also proud to be part of the Social Care Future movement, supporting a vision where everyone can live in a place they call home, connected to the people and activities that matter most.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading the team’s daily operations, allocating work and overseeing performance, quality, and statutory duties.
  • Managing, supporting, and developing staff, including recruitment, supervision, and performance management.
  • Working closely with partners across health, social care, voluntary sector and beyond, including chairing complex multi‑agency meetings.
  • Overseeing safeguarding activity within the team in line with the Care Act 2014 and local procedures.
  • Supporting service development and deputising for the Service Manager when needed.
  • Ensuring good governance, strong professional standards, and high‑quality practice across the team.
  • Handling customer complaints sensitively and ensuring lessons learned are shared.

Candidate criteria:

  • Qualified Social Worker (or equivalent), Registered Mental Health/Learning Disability Nurse, or Registered Occupational Therapist, with leadership experience or a management qualification.
  • Strong understanding of Adult Social Care legislation, Mental Health, and the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Skilled in problem solving, negotiation, leading change, and supporting service development.
  • Excellent communication and report‑writing skills, with the ability to manage complex and sensitive conversations.
  • Competent in planning, organising, and overseeing your own workload and that of others, with effective partnership‑working across organisations.
  • Strong IT capability (including Microsoft Office and social care systems),
  • AMHP qualification, budget management, and working across Health, Social Care, and the voluntary/community sector would be desirable.

Staff Benefits

You’ll have access to an excellent benefits package, including:

  • 31 days annual leave (pro rata) rising by five days after five years’ local government service, plus bank holidays
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • GP helpline, seven days a week
  • Employee Assistance Programme, including 24/7 confidential support
  • Free eye tests and flu vaccines
  • Free onsite gym (Shute End, Wokingham)
  • Salary sacrifice schemes – including car and cycle to work
  • Local and lifestyle discounts
  • Move through Menopause course
  • Sports and social clubs – running, football, cricket and more
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • Employee networks
  • And more!
